Fibromyalgia is the second most common rheumatological disorder in the world, and in Brazil it also holds this position, affecting approximately 2.5% of the population. Most cases occur in women, with an average age between 35 and 55 years.
The disease is characterized by diffuse and chronic musculoskeletal pain , often associated with symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disorders, morning stiffness, cognitive changes, chronic headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, and depression.
Studies prove that physical exercise is the most effective non-pharmacological treatment for improving pain and overall well-being.
Pilates is a highly recommended practice in these cases, as it unites body and mind, standing out for promoting coordination, flexibility, balance, body awareness, physical conditioning, posture, muscle tone, joint mobility, and blood circulation. Furthermore, it is a method accessible to people of all ages and capable of providing quick and effective results in quality of life.
Science has already demonstrated a reduction in pain of up to 66% in people with fibromyalgia who practice Pilates. This effect occurs, in part, through the release of hormones such as endorphins and serotonin, which act in the modulation of opioid receptors and regulate pain perception.
Therefore, the Pilates method proves to be an effective alternative for pain management and improved quality of life in people with fibromyalgia, with positive results starting as early as 4 weeks of practice. It is important, however, that the activity be performed continuously and with professional guidance to ensure the maintenance of the benefits.
If you live with fibromyalgia, know that you don't have to face the pain alone. Pilates can be the path to regaining lightness, energy, and quality of life. How about taking that first step and experiencing firsthand how movement can transform your daily life ?
